I think a lot of people think that branding is something you do down the road — later on …

I often hear, “well, I’m just getting started, so I don’t have a brand yet”.

Here’s the thing — YOU are your brand.

That doesn’t mean your face is displayed on every piece of advertisement you have. What it means is that people recognize you, your items, immediately. They know and trust what you have to offer. 


I did not start branding as early as I should have — at least I didn’t intentionally think about my brand like I should have. If one were to scroll back to my original photographs, the first items I listed for sale on platforms like Poshmark and eBay, you would find a very different look than my current set up. This isn’t a bad thing — everyone changes. But I wasn’t intentional. 

Now I am. 

I planned my current designs for a long time. Hours spent searching mood boards and designs on Pinterest, looking for what I felt described me. When I finally found it, I felt it was unique, beautiful and simple. 

So, how do you create your own brand? It’s more than just a logo or mark, a name for your IG account, or a label you affix to packages you ship out. While all of those things are components for being recognized as a brand, there’s more to it.

According to Grin.co, branding yourself first starts with deciding what your goal is for your business. What do you actually want to accomplish? Sit down and consider what it is you excel at — what do you have to offer? That is what your brand needs to be focused on.

After you figure this part out, you can create a strong statement to describe the purpose of your brand. This can then help you define a logo or tag line. 

After this comes the part of creating a cohesive presence on social media, e-commerce platforms and your website. This is where choosing colors, logos, marks and more comes into play with creating your brand. 

Applying this across social media and any other area you have a presence will begin developing YOU.

Many people have said they’ve come across my photos on search engines and immediately known it was me — my face is typically not shown in photographs anymore {resting bitch face, anyone?}, but simply from my background down to how my photos are edited and the mood they exude, they are immediately recognizable. 

That recognition is crucial to developing repeat customers and a loyal following. And it is never too early to develop that.
